Non printed vintage patterns - A tutorial.....

So you just brought the most amazing vintage pattern, all uncut and in its original goodness..?
Its going to be great, you think to yourself, ill sew up the most amazing vintage garment EVER!

The pattern arrives in the post...

You open to find that it is an unprinted pattern! @#$^&^!!!!

Don't worry i gotcha back with a few tips on how to make working with non printed patterns a cinch!

Working with unprinted vintage sewing patterns is actually really easy and just as straight forward as working with printed patterns, the same information is still there as the same printed patterns, basically it is just laid out in a different format, so don't worry you don't have to attend any special courses, or chase up your mates Grandma who is apparently a sewing genius and has been sewing for  100 years and knows everything..... You just need to understand a few basic tips.

First things first ..

Where do you find these little bits of knowledge that will make you unprinted sewing pattern experience  a happy one?

Depending on the actual pattern you have brought, you may need to refer to the back of the pattern,  instruction sheet or pattern layout. With my particular pattern my happy pieces of information , they were located on the instruction sheet.

Hang on, there ain't no lines on my pattern pieces?

You will notice when you open up your pattern pieces they are all marked with a letter and a few random perforated holes everywhere. The letters on each pattern piece determine which pattern pieces are which, i.e  'A' is the front bodice, B is the back bodice. This system is very much like printed patterns and each pattern piece having a number or letter to determine which piece is which. Again you can see this information on the layout below.

And what about all these perforated holes throughout each pattern piece, and seemingly without any real system...???

Again refer to your happy information place, wherever it is in your pattern. These perforated holes  indicate the darts, which pattern pieces are required to be cut on the fold, grain-lines etc

Now you know what these perforated holes represent, you need to find out EXACTLY what they mean on your pattern ( this will again differ between each pattern)  for example:

As you can see on my pattern instruction sheet, it tells me the 3 large holes, represent cutting the pattern piece on the straight grain, the 2 large perforated  holes placed close together indicate to place the pattern piece on the fold. I suggest tracing you pattern pieces, so you can scribble  down all this info onto the pattern pieces, and refer to this info as you are working, without ruining the vintage pattern.

These are the main tips you need to keep in mind when working with an unprinted sewing pattern, but below are a couple more to keep in the back of your mind  before you cut into your gorgeous fabric:

*Remember to also keep your eye out for whether or not the seam allowance is included ( as it obviously wont be marked) in the pattern or whether you need to add it - majority of times it will be added in the pattern, but just check.

*Marking your darts etc, Again refer to your happy information place, and read up on what method they suggest.  I mark  the darts using pins, pinned straight through the perforated hole and fabric, then pull the pattern pieces away, leaving the pins in place marking the dart, super easy!

*Make sure to have all you pattern pieces facing the right  side up, it sounds silly but with only the letters to determine which pattern pieces are which,  letters can decidedly look the same from each side of the pattern pieces. If you get confused by this, just refer back to where your happy information place is located to see the exact diagram of the pattern piece.

I hope you find this little tutorial helpful and don't feel  intimidated anymore when that perfect vintage turns up in the post and you realize  it is unprinted. You just need to hunt for that happy  information in the pattern and you will sewing your perfect vintage garment in no time!

Billie Jean paper sewing pattern ........

OK folks.... another shipping update and this is definitely is the final one!

UK, US & EUROPE you gals  will be getting your Billie Jean paper  pattern this week, they have been shipped today!!!Aussie peeps your Billie Jean patterns are following just behind and will  hopefully be in your creative hands by  the end of this week or at the latest early/mid next week - Unfortunately i couldn't get around this, i had to make the decision to split the patterns into 2 orders to ensure there was no more further delay with customs and  getting them out to you, even though there is still a little bit more time to wait for you Aussie gals, trust me this was the only solution i had.. its a long, long story.

I must say  i am  soooooo glad this is nearly over! I  thank you for your patience, i truly appreciate it, this has been a nightmare, and one i didn't see coming....

Now i can get back on track with Bluegingerdoll AND we can get started on the Billie Jean  sew along that i have all ready to go and all the other cool sewing stuff i have waiting on the sidelines!

I also have plans to release the second Bluegingerdoll sewing pattern, very very soon. This would have been out earlier, but due to the Billie Jean paper pattern debacle it has been pushed back a little bit, sad face... but then a happy face, cause there will be another pre-sale for this newbie pattern! And some new packaging designs i have been working on, its so pretty! I will announce this release date soon!

After this debacle with the Billie Jean sewing pattern i have implemented new and (hopefully) improved processes ( i think i have tamed this pattern printing beast)  that will ensure this time around if you buy a Bluegingerdoll paper sewing pattern, you will get it straight away, even during the pre-sale - no more delays with receiving your sewing patterns!!

So please don't let the Billie Jean paper pattern hiccup deter you away from Bluegingerdoll and future pattern releases,  i can assure you it will smooth sailing for all of us and the steep learning curve is done with! There are also some pretty spesh sewing patterns to sew coming soon as well.

In other news......

* PDF PATTERNS - I have decided to pull them  back to the drawing board for the time being, why?  They are proving to be a little bit more, OK a lot more  of a hassle then a convenience - but i don't think you gals will mind, right? This also means the patterns is no longer listed on Craftsy.

* FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE - that's right folks, Bluegingerdoll patterns will be shipped     WORLDWIDE FOR FREE from now on! I like free stuff and i bet you do too! This will be available on the WEBSITE and ETSY.

That's all the news for now! Hope this all sounds awesome to you! Cause I'm excited!

I will post up the sew- along date later on this week :)

Update & Sew Along postponement.....

Just a quick post  with an update on the Billie Jean paper sewing pattern.... unfortunately  there is going to be a bit more of a delay with the Billie Jean pattern getting to you peeps.... but  not too much longer.
I am hoping for them to be received next week, there has been  a bit of kerfuffle with the postage and all that garb, that was totally  beyond everyone control. I apologise lots and lots!

This means the postponement of the Billie Jean sew along which was scheduled to start on the 8th of July - i cant see this happening at the moment, for the obvious reason you wont have your patterns.
So at this point in time, just hold tight for me until i can schedule a new sew along date in, which i am hoping it  can be the week after the 8th.

After all this b/s is over with and we happy sewing up the Billie Jean paper sewing pattern, I will get on with releasing all the exciting news that i saved up and haven't been able to tell, while all this stuff has been going on!

Bluegingerdoll will be back on the right track, so stay tuned!

Billie Jean & a Sew Along.....

Ok lovely readers i have had an update with the printing and postage date  for the Billie Jean paper pattern......Today! it is on its way to me today!  This has obviously gone over my initial estimate of you gals  receiving it mid -june, so i do apologize immensely for that, it was one of those shitty circumstances that was  out of  everyone's control.

But fear no more!  Once the pattern arrives from the  printers, which should be next week.... i will be posting out your Billie Jeans ASAP!  I am going to  drop everything,  loosen my tie, order Chinese takeaway, drink copious amounts of coffee, pull an all nighter, so i can get them to you ASAP!

So what does that mean for all you patient, awesome peeps, now? I  can finally set the date for the  Billie Jean sew along! I am planning for the Sew along to start on  Monday July 8th. This gives everyone enough time to receive the pattern, and decide on which Billie Jean dress you will make (or both) and pick out the perfect fabric.
From the the start of the sew along, on the 8th of July i will posting almost daily until the end.  This means you  have 2 whole weeks to take your time and sew up your own gorgeous Billie Jean dress.  I will be covering both of the Billie Jean dress versions in the sew along as well!
So if you are  up for it, you could probably make both of the dresses in this time frame. It is going to be a  jammed packed sew along!

Also what is great about the sew along is that the tutorials will be  forever  on the blog, so if you cant join in on  this sew along , you are most welcome to refer back to the blog whenever you like and make a Billie Jean whenever you like!

For the PDF pattern purchasers, don't fret if you have already sewn up Billie Jean, because  I will be providing a lot more detailed instructions than what I included in the pattern instructions. So if this is the case for you, feel free to sew up another Billie Jean, or even get some new design inspiration and create a whole new Billie Jean or  simply just follow along and get inspired and support others while they sew. I am confident that  you will pick up at least one or two new sewing tricks that you may find useful.

So grab you calendars, iphones, pen and paper, whatever you can find and mark down the start date for the Billie Jean sew along -  July the 8th !!!!

I cant wait to begin, it is going to be an awesome sewing adventure and i am bursting at the seams with all these tutorials and design ideas to share with  you all!

In the next week or so  i will post up a rough schedule of the sew along and what to expect during the 2 weeks.

I have also created a Flickr group for the Billie Jean sew along, which i am hoping will be a  place where you can ask any questions you have, support each other during the sew along, post photos of your progress, share sewing tips and tricks and also  at the end of the sew along  show off your newly finished Billie Jean  in the big end of sew along finale  round up! But more info on that later...

So head on over and sign up, and also check out all of the already finished Billie Jean's for some inspiration as well.

Also you are most welcome to  add the following sew along  badge ( on the right ) to your blog sidebar if you are taking part in the Billie Jean sew along:

Have a great weekend!

Billie Jean in Green

Heading towards the end of the pre sale, which has been extended until the 19th May, here is my final Billie Jean dress sample to share with you. Excuse the photos this time around, Melbourne freezing, dark and  and cold at the moment, and i am  getting home in the dark, so  my only option is for photos to be taken  inside. Oh and i ain't heading outside in this weather with this dress on!

I may possibly be addicted to this type of Hawaiian fabric, especially when making a Billie Jean, i tells ya, dress 1 of the Billie jean pattern, loves it!

The Billie Jean pattern calls for Dress 1 the wiggle dress to be fully lined, and Dress the full gathered skirt to have only the bodice lined. I have lined all of my Billie Jean's, and it did occur to me i haven't shown any inside shots of the Billie Jean dresses, so here are a couple:

I lined this Green Billie Jean with a soft white cotton, for the comfort factor, but obviously you can line the Billie Jean dresses in whatever you chose, but i do  recommend sticking to lightweight fabrics.

Nice hand stitching  with the lining at the zipper, if i do say so myself!

So there you have it folks, the final of my Billie Jean dress samples, buuuutttt its not the end, the more the make the pattern the more ideas i have for it  - so stay tuned!

Also if you haven't heard the Billie Jean sewing pattern pre sale has been extended until the 19th May this Sunday, so grab a copy before it goes back to the RRP.

Or if you consider yourself bit of gambler and want  to see if you can win one of two copies of the pattern up for grabs, check out the Billie Jean pattern giveaway over on Paunnet's blog:

paunnet.blogspot.com.au/

Giveaway ends on the 19th of May!

So tell me which is your favorite Billie Jean?

 Have a great weekend.

Lapped zipper tutorial

I thought i would share with you a technique that i use quite regularly on all my garment creations, a lapped zipper, and also step into tutorial land... so please be kind!
Inserting a lapped zipper was the first way, i learnt to install a zipper, another cool technique from my mum! Thanks Mum :)
I have dabbled with invisible zippers, but i keep coming back to lapped zippers, mainly just for that classic finishing touch on a garment... and they are just beautiful .. i think!
And also they are also used in majority of vintage patterns i would say.
So give them a spin for a true vintage garment, and after reading this tutorial you will find they are easy to install as well!
If you don't know what a lapped zipper, well here is the definition of it:
A finished lapped  zipper has an overlap on the left side of the opening that covers the zipper completely from view. .....Easy peasy!
So here we go, here is what you will need:
A zipper foot for your sewing machine & normal dress zipper.

Step 1. Sew the seam up to the zipper opening.

Step 2.  On the both left & right sides of the zipper opening, turn the seam allowance under 5/8” and press.

3. Starting on the left side, pin your zipper in place, 3/4'' below neck seam. Make sure the  zipper teeth are just next to the fabric’s fold. Pin through the zipper tape as well.

Step 4. Install the zipper foot on your machine and start stitching the zipper in place, stitching right on the fold and close to the zipper teeth edge.

Check it out, 1st row of stitching complete!

Step 5. Close the zipper and pin the right side of the opening in place so that its fold just matches the line of stitching you made in step 4, and covers the zipper from view . Again pinning through the fabric and through the zipper tape.

6. Open the zipper up, and start stitching, following your pin line.

7. When you get to the bottom, close the zipper and pivot to stitch horizontally across the base of the zipper. I always back stitch a little, just to secure that beauty in place!

 Check out this awesomeness!

See how the lapped fold covers the zipper?! Cool!

Just an example of what it will look like when folded down  along the neckline.

Snip off the leftover zip on the inside of the dress, below your stitch line, of course!

Whats your favourite sewing technique?
I hope you give lapped Zippers a go and also add them to your sewing repertoire! Cause their ace!
