Finishing your seams ....

Hello lovely readers, its been a wee bit quiet around these parts. I have been frantically working on the upcoming Billie Jean sew along tutorials, the new pattern design, among other sewing related things, of course. I am back, and  hopefully on a more regular basis, as  i think i have tamed the wild beast jobs list i had going on!

So to get prepared, refresh our memories and basically just get into the  mood for some serious sewing with the upcoming  Billie Jean sew along i thought it would be helpful to get back to some basics and do a little  post on finishing your seams. I will be doing some more  little posts like this leading up to the Billie Jean sew along, so we are all super prepared.
I hope somewhere along the lines in one of these posts you may find a little helpful tip! And the coolest part you will be able to refer back to these little sewing blog posts whenever you like, during the sew along or at a later date!

On the Billie Jean pattern instruction sheet  i specify to just finish your seams, which is a tad bit general, considering there are few ways to finish off your seams.Below are some of the most common and some of the main ways  i use:

What does it mean to finish your seams exactly?

Finishing your seams is basically securing and tidying up the raw edge of the seam allowance, the most commonly is an 5/8'' allowance. More importantly finishing your seams also prevents the edges from fraying. So after you have stitched your seam using the 5/8'' AND pressed your seam opened, you can then begin to finish the seam edges with one of the methods below. FYI i have only listed the most commonly used, more fancy ones will be covered at a later date.

Pinked seam

* 'Pinking' is basically using  your pinking shears to trim the excess fabric on the seam allowance, and prevent fraying. One of most quick and easy ways to finish off your seams. I use a lot just mainly because it is quick and easy and i it feels like i am kindergarten, doing a real good crafty project with these bad boy scissors.

Overlocking/ Serging

* Definitely my favourite way to finish off my seams, its quick and easy. The Overlocker  trims  the excess fabric and stitches the raw edges nicely as it goes, and it  looks super duper professional once done. Sometimes i also finish my edges as one seam instead of the 2 separate edges with the overlocker, its just personal preference which way to choose to finish them with the Overlocker, i do both. I highly recommend spoiling yourself and buying an Overlocker if you don't have one. Depending on what part of the world you call home, it can be an Overlocker or Serger. It is a worthwhile investment, especially if you are a keen as mustard and addicted sewer! Once you get one you will be in love and wonder why you have waited so long!

Bound seam

*I have done this once or twice, only because i am lazy when i comes to be finishing off the inside of my garments as well as i have done on the outside. But this is a worthwhile way to finish off your garment in a super fancy schmancy way if you are so inclined. Although i wouldn't recommend it on light or sheer fabrics, as  it will add bulk to the seams, and just look plain weird. Basically the bias binding encloses the raw edges of the seam allowance, finishing in it in this way. So just pin it on each side of the raw edge and stitch away!

FYI i am expecting the Billie Jean sewing pattern to be received from the printers today or at the latest Monday! Crossing my fingers that they aren't stuck in customs! But i have a sickly feeling that they are, so this means if they are, there is a high possibility of rescheduling the sew along until they arrive and you get your patterns... see how things roll and i will keep you up to date as soon as i have more up to date info.

Sorry folks, and  I thank you again for your patience with this massive delay, this was meant to be the easy side of the whole pattern release.. boy it seems i was wrong. This will be the first and last time delays like this will happen to my pattern releases, its too darn stressful for me and you peeps and it makes really unhappy to think of all you waiting on your Billie Jean pattern to be received in the post, that is why i am currently in process of sorting out other alternatives for the patterns.

Remember also to join up to the Flickr group for the sew along, and you feel like it grab the Sew along button on the side bar and show some Bluegingerdoll love. Also Google reader is shutting up shop very very soon, so if you follow me on there don't forget to follow along on Bloglovin, Feedly... the usual following along suspects.

Billie Jean & a Sew Along.....

Ok lovely readers i have had an update with the printing and postage date  for the Billie Jean paper pattern......Today! it is on its way to me today!  This has obviously gone over my initial estimate of you gals  receiving it mid -june, so i do apologize immensely for that, it was one of those shitty circumstances that was  out of  everyone's control.

But fear no more!  Once the pattern arrives from the  printers, which should be next week.... i will be posting out your Billie Jeans ASAP!  I am going to  drop everything,  loosen my tie, order Chinese takeaway, drink copious amounts of coffee, pull an all nighter, so i can get them to you ASAP!

So what does that mean for all you patient, awesome peeps, now? I  can finally set the date for the  Billie Jean sew along! I am planning for the Sew along to start on  Monday July 8th. This gives everyone enough time to receive the pattern, and decide on which Billie Jean dress you will make (or both) and pick out the perfect fabric.
From the the start of the sew along, on the 8th of July i will posting almost daily until the end.  This means you  have 2 whole weeks to take your time and sew up your own gorgeous Billie Jean dress.  I will be covering both of the Billie Jean dress versions in the sew along as well!
So if you are  up for it, you could probably make both of the dresses in this time frame. It is going to be a  jammed packed sew along!

Also what is great about the sew along is that the tutorials will be  forever  on the blog, so if you cant join in on  this sew along , you are most welcome to refer back to the blog whenever you like and make a Billie Jean whenever you like!

For the PDF pattern purchasers, don't fret if you have already sewn up Billie Jean, because  I will be providing a lot more detailed instructions than what I included in the pattern instructions. So if this is the case for you, feel free to sew up another Billie Jean, or even get some new design inspiration and create a whole new Billie Jean or  simply just follow along and get inspired and support others while they sew. I am confident that  you will pick up at least one or two new sewing tricks that you may find useful.

So grab you calendars, iphones, pen and paper, whatever you can find and mark down the start date for the Billie Jean sew along -  July the 8th !!!!

I cant wait to begin, it is going to be an awesome sewing adventure and i am bursting at the seams with all these tutorials and design ideas to share with  you all!

In the next week or so  i will post up a rough schedule of the sew along and what to expect during the 2 weeks.

I have also created a Flickr group for the Billie Jean sew along, which i am hoping will be a  place where you can ask any questions you have, support each other during the sew along, post photos of your progress, share sewing tips and tricks and also  at the end of the sew along  show off your newly finished Billie Jean  in the big end of sew along finale  round up! But more info on that later...

So head on over and sign up, and also check out all of the already finished Billie Jean's for some inspiration as well.

Also you are most welcome to  add the following sew along  badge ( on the right ) to your blog sidebar if you are taking part in the Billie Jean sew along:

Have a great weekend!

News & some house keeping ....

Just a quick post to apologise for being  just a little MIA at the moment.. I am still hovering  around in the shadows, sneaking a peek out every now and then!

So here is the deal at the moment at my little part of the world.  I am busy gearing up with the arrival of the Billie Jean paper pattern to send out to all of you lovely and patient folks, unfortunately there has been a slight delay at the printers, and i am expecting the pattern to be in my hands by next week and sent out you folks ASAP! My sincerest apologies for this i only just found out of this slight  delay. It is  totally one of those things that is out of  everyone's hands..... In saying this though, it  has been a steep learning curve for me and starting an independent sewing pattern business. I  have learnt some very  valuable lessons ( quickly), that  wont be repeated for future sewing pattern releases.

On a happier note  i have also been  working on some fabulous tutorials for the upcoming Billie Jean sew along! The sew along dates will be set very soon, and it wont be too far away -  so squirrel that away in the back of your sewing  memory bank. The sew along is going to be massive folks!  Mostly  due to the fact i have the  2 Billie Jean dresses to sew along about, so i am cramming lots of good sewing info in each tutorial for y'all. It has been a huge task but well worth it and i hope in the end you can learn at least one new sewing trick whilst making your Billie Jean.

Sew along tutorial

Oh and i  am also smack bang in the middle of getting the next  Bluegingerdoll sewing pattern design ready to release to the world. At the moment the sewing pattern  is in the frenetic stage of testing, tweaking, instruction writing, just  all the good stuff of  releasing a sewing pattern.... Did  i mention i also work full time at my day job, and like every other human i need to eat and sleep on a regular basis... But seeing as this is my second sewing pattern it is defiantly turning out to be much more of a smoother process than the first pattern, Billie Jean. As i said before I have had a few steep learning curves and made a lot more mistakes along the way, so this sewing pattern is and has been definitely a lot less stressful  and the path a whole lot clearer to getting the sewing pattern released. I have still needed some potato chips, ice cream to console me a few times along the way!

New sewing pattern sneak peek

I am hoping i can reveal the next Bluegingerdoll sewing pattern design to you very very soon! I am really excited bout this one, it is oh so pretty!

Pretty fabric for my new sewing pattern design samples

So apologies for my absence,  there is a lot going on at the moment.Sit tight, i will  be back soon with regular posts and some real awesome stuff!

But remember you can still pick up a copy of the Billie Jean sewing pattern, PDF or Paper  on the WEBSITE, ETSY or CRAFTSY, and also join up to the Bluegingerdoll Flickr group and join in the sew along.

And one more thing, GOOGLE FRIEND CONNECT is heading out so remember if you want to still stick around and read my rants you can still follow my blog and  catch me on Bloglovin ,Feedly, Facebook or just whatever means you like!

In the meantime i hope the Vintage pin up head scarf is keeping you busy, hope your making a million!

Vintage inspired 50's Pin up headscarf tutorial....

Need a quick sewing project that doesn't hurt your brain? Got lots of awesome scrap fabric laying around, that you are hoarding hoping there is a project that will fit into that small, randomly cut piece of fabric? Having a bad hair day? Want to look glamorous almost instantly? Lover of the  vintage look? What to start with a really easy drafting project?

Then make yourself a vintage inspired 50's pin up head scarf! This is fun and extremely easy project to do , you could loads of em  in an afternoon.  I wear mine all the time and i  promise you will be to!

Grab some paper and pencil and lets get drafting....

To start with  draft a 32'' length x  4'' wide rectangle type shape. I have found these measurements to be spot on, but you can make it longer or shorter depending on you own personal taste.

I just drew the pointed end triangle shape freehand. Add a 1.5 cm  seam allowance around the entire head scarf.

Cut out 2 pieces of whatever fabric is laying around, i recommend florals, gingham, bold bright colors or a reversible headscarf with 2 different types of bold fabric.

Right sides together stitch pieces together, leaving open about an inch or so sized gap.

Trim your seams and turn the headscarf right side out. Press.

Top stitch right around the head scarf edge, enclosing the gap, Ta da!

You got yourself a darn pretty headscarf!

I may have made quite a few...

There are a million ways to wear this headscarf, so get creative! But the best one is, it totally matches the Billie Jean dress!

I will also  have new updates for you on the Billie Jean printing and also some exciting sew along info coming up in the next couple of days so get cracking on making some 50's headscarves to wear with you new Billie Jean! It is arriving soon i promise!

Soooooo...... i  have created  a Flickr group for all you talented seamstresses to share your ace Billie Jeans and future  Bluegingerdoll pattern designs or  even just simply have a chat to other like minded sewing folk about anything sewing related or just have a squizz at all the fabulous finished projects!

Billie Jean revamped.....

gingham7a

Have you seen the revamped Billie Jean version made by the lovely Bex over at her blog:  subversiveanarchicfemme ?! I tells ya, its amazing!

Bex revamped  dress 2 of the  Billie Jean pattern,  and used it as a base for an amazing dress design she was inspired by and  wanted to recreate..... and recreate she did, the final dress is absolutely divine and an exact replica of the dress.

gingham2a
The gingham fabric is divine

Bex made several muslin's to attain the perfect fit she has achieved, I highly recommend this for the Billie Jean bodice. She also made  several modifications to the Billie Jean  dress design, to recreate the dress she was inspired by.

She also self drafted the fabulous collar detail, and hand stitched the entire collar by hand to the dress!!! Also  if you ask nicely she will send you a copy of the collar, to make one of these dresses for yourself!!!

Make your way over to Bex's blog  subversiveanarchicfemme and have a bit more of a read about the dress, and  all the other cool stuff she makes!

The Billie Jean neckline & Bra Friendliness......

The neckline design on the Billie Jean sewing pattern, is one of the  design features that i am  so very  proud of. I managed to create it exactly to what i had been imagining..... After about a million or so tests and a zillion more  re tests, but  I  got there in the end and i couldn't be happier with it. I wanted to create a  neckline design  that was alluring, flattering, feminine and sexy but in a  elegant way, but in saying all of this i get the fact that this neckline design isn't conducive to covering up bra straps. My advice would be to wear  a either strapless bra or a bustier type bra with the Billie Jean dress,  which is what i do and they are awesome..... But if these bra suggestions are totally not your thing or  you cant be bothered going out and buying a bra just to go with one dress ....guess what?! You can easily adjust the pattern at the neckline, so it becomes more bra friendly and covers those pesky bra straps, but still keeps the  original elegant neckline design.

So here is a quick & easy tutorial in adjusting the Billie Jean neckline to cover thou bra straps:

I highly recommend making a muslin with the Billie Jean bodice, i have designed the bodice to be quite tight fitting and without much ease, to cinch in those waists ladies!

So you will  complete these adjustments when you are constructing your bodice muslin.

Step 1 - Try on your bodice muslin  and move the bodice shoulder up to the point where it covers your bra straps. Pin in place to your bra straps to hold in place. You will notice that once you started to move the shoulder up, the  neckline started to bunch out along the front neckline. This is the excess fabric you will need to pinch out to make the changes to the neckline. Make sure to pinch it out evenly on both sides of the neckline.

Step 2 - Pin  your pinched out fabric and  mark the changes on the muslin. Transfer these changes to your paper pattern pieces.
Don't forget, you will need to complete this for the front AND back of the bodice  pattern pieces, so that your  shoulder seams match up.

Step 3- Redraw your bodice pattern pieces, truing up  the neckline as you go.

Step 4- Cut out your awesome fabric, and get sewing on your Billie Jean!!!

Step 5- Wear your bestest bra, granny bra, what ever bra.... cause you can now!!!

Hope this helps you with more bra friendliness!
